Mark your calendars and set aside Saturday, June 17, 2023, for our next Authentic Catholic Patriotism Initiative Gathering. There will be an 11 am Mass followed by lunch at noon. The lecture should start around 12:30 pm. We plan to coincide this event with our blessing of the new flagpole as well (Flag Day is just three days earlier). This event, sponsored by both local and regional Knights of Columbus, is open to all. RSVP through the form below.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Adam Tate, a Knight, and a professor of history at Clayton State University. Professor Tate has written on the Catholic Church here in the South. He should be able to bring a great historical perspective to our ongoing conversation as we prepare for the nation’s 250th anniversary. His topic will be as follows: “The Political Strategies of Our Southern Catholic Forefathers”
The Holy See created the Catholic Diocese of Charleston in 1820 and sent John England, a priest from Cork, Ireland, to serve as the first bishop. At that time, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina comprised the Diocese of Charleston. Bishop England and his successors before the Civil War (1861-1865) actively engaged American and Southern cultures. This lecture examines three of the strategies or approaches that they used and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Please submit your name and email as a RSVP for Lunch after the 11 am mass
